At 18 Díaz was not even attached to a professional club. As a native of La Guajira, one of the Colombia's most underdeveloped regions, and a member of Wayuu, an indigenous community afflicted by poverty and malnutrition, the odds of finding one were stacked against him.

His professional journey started domestically in Barranquilla, Colombia 🇨🇴 in 2016, before moving up a division to the Primera A to play for Atletico junior, where he noticed 15 goals in 67 games. From there, he earned a move to Portuguese gaint Porto as a 22 years old man. 

Díaz made his senior debut on 26 April 2016, coming on as a second half substitute in a 2-1 categoría primera B home loss against Deportivo pereira. His first senior goal came on 14 may,as he scored the winner in a 2-1 home defeat of Cúcuta Deportivo.
